The heat-protective shelter is designed for the use in extinguishing fires of oil- and gas-gushers instead of the commonly used shelters, which are made of sheet metal and placed near the mouths of these gushers. The shelters of sheet metal heat under the attack of heat radiation and becomes a source of such radiation. Therefore, the degree of attenuation of heat radiation by these shelters is low.

The heat-protective shelter based on the screens «Sogda» almost completely attenuates the heat radiation of gushers (inside the shelter, a person can be even in ordinary clothes). In so doing the protective properties of the heat-protective shelter can be kept unchanged for many days. Thus, the use of the said heat-protective shelter provides the most favorable conditions for the relaxation of firemans performing works in the immediate vicinity of gushers.

In December 2002, an experimental heat-protective shelter has been successfully applied in extinguishing the fire of a gas-gusher more than 90 meters in height on Kukdumalak deposit in Uzbekistan. The shelter was sited 25 meters from the mouth of the gusher and continuously operated for 16 days. The temperature of internal walls of the shelter did not exceed 15 °C, and the temperature inside the shelter did not exceed 10 °C.

At the final stage of work on the extinguishing of the gas-gusher fire, when the cutting of a preventer was performing, vertical flame of the gas-gusher turned into flame sprayed in all directions. Under the attack of flame, the routine shelter of sheet metal deformed and lost its protective function. The heat-protective shelter based on the screens "Sogda" wnthstood the attack of the flame without changing its protective properties and was found to be the reliable shelter in this situation.
